So what’s Mindfulness all about?

‘Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgementally’  Jon Kabat-Zinn

It is a powerful practice of the mind and body where we shift our attention from thinking about things to direct awareness of our experience: what we can see, hear, taste, touch and feel though our senses. This brings us into the present moment and connects us to our awareness. We can bring this awareness to our own thoughts and feelings too.

The problem with meditating

Knowing how to shift from being caught-up in thinking into clearly noticing our thoughts and experience helps us to see how thinking and behaviour can be automatic and not give us the outcomes we wanted. This uncluttered perspective helps us develop a wiser and less reactive relationship to what’s happening both in us and around us.

Mindfulness also helps us to notice how quickly our moods and thoughts can take off, and in noticing this to take a step back from the heat of the moment and give ourselves the space to choose how we might respond instead of reacting automatically and without awareness.

Cast your mind back to what you were worrying about last month or last year…

  • Did all those things ever happen?
  • Are they the same things you are worrying about now?

Quite often things have a way of shifting and changing with time, Mindfulness helps us notice that and choose not to follow worrying thoughts.

In doing this we also learn to bring kindness and acceptance to ourselves and give ourselves a break from our inner self-critic.

You’re the Teacher

The great thing about mindfulness is that it’s also something that you can learn to do for yourself, giving you improved focus and attention and a sense of control back in your life.

One Small Thing…

Try eating a piece of fruit mindfully by eating it slowly and savouring every mouthful taking in all of its colour texture, taste and smell.

Notice how you feel afterwards?

What is different?

It’s good to share…
